Mohammed Sami
KM21 proudly presents the first solo exhibition in the Netherlands of Mohammed Sami. His enigmatic, suggestive paintings explore the unreliability or fragility of memory. Although his scenes never show figures, a human presence is always palpable, whether it concerns claustrophobic domestic interiors, ghostly landscapes or loaded everyday objects. In his work, Sami draws on personal experiences and memories. At the same time, the ambiguity of the images (what are we looking at?) allows them to transcend the individual and refer to universal feelings of melancholy, mourning, longing and displacement.
Mohammed Sami (1984, Baghdad, Iraq) lives and works in London. He studied at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad, the Ulster University-Belfast School of Art and Goldsmiths College in London.
